We all know what's coming. We know what's coming because we've seen this same story countless times in other countries that banned abortion. Women and girls will die.
Biology Lesson for Women-Haters
About one in every fifty pregnancies is ectopic. This is but one of the complications that can result from pregnancies. An ectopic pregnancy is when a fertilized egg plants in the fallopian tube instead of the uterus. If not treated, the fetus will eventually grow large enough to rupture the fallopian tube, and the mother will bleed to death very quickly because a lot of blood is passing through that part of the body.
Contrary to woman-haters' claims, it is impossible to remove the blastocyst and "reimplant" it in the uterus. Your choices are to abort or let the pregnant woman or girl bleed to death. While this is not the only complication that can threaten a pregnant woman's life, it is the most common. Because of the abortion bans that are about to sweep across the nation, many doctors will choose to let their (post-born) patients die for fear of being prosecuted for murdering a fetus.
Again, we know this is going to happen because we've seen it all before in other countries.
Christian Excuses for Preventable Deaths
We are about to see deaths happen that would not have happened before the abortion ban.
Housewives with children will die. When they do, Christians will tell their grieving children that their mothers deserved to die because they had sex.
Rape victims will die. When they do, Christians will tell their grieving families that they deserved to die because they committed the crime of getting raped.
Children will die. When they do, Christians will tell their grieving families that their underage daughters deserved to die because they committed the crime of getting raped.
Please bear in mind that none of the above is going to happen to wealthy people. Wealthy people and some middle-class people can afford to travel to other places where abortion is legal. This will primarily affect poor and lower-middle-class women and girls.
Every time one of these deaths occurs, I want everyone to remember that conservative Christians bombed clinics, assassinated doctors, set women on fire, and threw acid on women in order to bring about a world in which women and underage girls die needlessly. They butchered human beings so that they could butcher even more human beings so that women could have fewer rights than our society grants to corpses.
Unintended Consequences: Increase In Rape
I do not have evidence for the following from previous countries that passed abortion bans, so feel free to take this prediction with a grain of salt. The same people who promote abortion bans also tend to believe that all or most rape allegations are false. If you put them in charge of a justice system, rapists are more likely to get away with it, although in fairness, America has a very low conviction rate for rape in general, and those conviction rates are lower still for date rape, and lower than that for rape victims who are married and raped by their husbands.
As a result of the Supreme Court ruling, it is expected that 26 states will ban abortions by various means to various degrees. I expect that women in those red states are now more likely to say no to sex given that having sex is more likely to result in death. If there is an increase in women saying "no" to sex in red states, I expect that there will be a corresponding increase in the number of rapes.
If I'm right, the abortion ban will result in more rapes, which in turn will result in more dead women and girls as a percentage of the resulting pregnancies will result in death.
Legal Consequences
The whole concept of legal precedence just ended. The Supreme Court ruled that precedence can be overturned on a whim. I'm not going to pretend to know what consequences this will have, but the entire judicial system just lost legitimacy in the eyes of most of America and most of the world.
Political Consequences
This will result in Republicans losing elections that they would not have lost without the abortion ban. What we don't know is how many elections will now have different results, but there are polls that give us some idea. For example, this CNN poll says that only 20% want abortion completely banned, and only 20% want abortions restricted. A poll by AP finds that 87% of people support abortion to save the life of the mother. Most of those in that 87% already understand that women and girls are about to die as a result of overturning Roe v Wade. Those from the 87% who don't understand this are about to learn as women and girls start dying and we get the inevitable news articles that happened in every country that banned abortion before now. A Quinnipiac poll found that 63% of Americans agree with Roe v Wade.
Whatever percent of the voting population previously voted against Republicans is about to increase to anywhere from 63% to 87%. Further, there will likely be a lot of people who didn't vote before who will register to vote specifically to vote against Republicans.
While I am not qualified to make any predictions about what effect this US Supreme Court ruling could have on future elections, the result could be a complete bloodbath for Republicans, and this on the heels of the January 6 hearings showing that Republican leadership is made up of a bunch of traitors who tried to steal an election and end Constitutional rule.
Religious Consequences
I think the religious consequences are obvious. America is going to have a lot fewer Christians by the time the dust settles from all of this.
Please understand that church attendance and church membership has been in decline for decades now. Most of those leaving Christianity are turning to the "I believe in religion, just not organized religion" crowd (which makes up the biggest portion of the "nones" [those who answer "none of the above" in polls]). More importantly, the loss of religion is happening more strongly among the young, so we know that the number of religious adherents will continue to decline in the future as the elderly die off and are replaced by younger, less-religious generations. Even without the abortion ban, religion is in decline in America, and in a few decades, will be as unreligious as the UK is.
In America, Christianity is hemorrhaging adherents, and I do not think it is a stretch to suggest that making abortion illegal despite popular support will accelerate the decline of Christianity.
Maternal Mortality Rates
America already has a high maternal mortality rate compared to other countries thanks to our bad healthcare system. It's about to get even higher with the abortion ban. While I would rather abortion remain legal and that the women who are about to die needlessly to stay alive, watching the decline of both the Republican party and Christianity is the silver lining on this dark cloud.
Great article!
