The January 6 hearings are in the news, so of course, any time you want to discuss the coup, Republicans will change the subject like cowards and suddenly start talking about how violent BLM using that tiresome "but what about" tu quoque fallacy that they copied from Cold War Soviet diplomats.
Their response to almost everything is to change the subject like cowards because they know that almost every one of their truth claims and opinions is indefensible. You need to stop letting them get away with changing the subject, so let me give you a specific way to steer the conversation back to the original topic when it comes to January 6 and the Black Lives Matter protests.
The Black Lives Matter movement enjoyed a lot of popular support. As a result of this, there have been a large number of protests about police brutality. Republicans just love to talk about how unacceptably violent the BLM protests have been. According to police, there were 2,000 police injuries over the course of 8,700 BLM protests. Since Republicans are not very good at grade school arithmetic, do this calculation for them.
2,000 police injuries ÷ 8,700 protests ≈ 0.23 police injuries per protest
This is unacceptably violent according to Republicans. Now let's compare this shocking level of BLM violence to the January 6 coup attempt, the topic Republicans are desperate to avoid. According to the police union, some 140 police were injured at a single "protest" at a single location in a single day. 140 in a single "protest."
So let's compare the violence of Republicans to the violence of BLM protesters by making a ratio. Once again, you will have to do this calculation for Republicans because grade school arithmetic is beyond their abilities.
140 ÷ 0.23 ≈ 140 × (8,700 ÷ 2,000) = 609
So if we measure by police injuries per protest, Republicans are 609 times more violent than BLM. Republicans insist that the January 6 coup was a "peaceful protest" and that we should therefore not be upset about an attempt to overthrow the government and end Constitutional rule. But if BLM is unacceptably violent and Republicans are 609 times more violent than BLM, how can they refer to the coup as a "peaceful protest"?
See how this works? They start by bringing up BLM protests in order to change the subject away from the coup. You use the above (and definitely show them the arithmetic because they WILL have trouble following math this complicated) to steer the conversation back to the coup attempt on January 6. Every time they try to change the subject with talk about BLM, use that to point out that Republicans were 609 times more violent than BLM. Eventually, they will get tired of being reminded that Republicans are 609 times more violent than BLM and will avoid bringing up BLM as an attempt to change the subject. But there's a chance that they won't be able to stop themselves because they were brainwashed into changing the subject. This is not of their own volition. Most of them aren't actually that dishonest. They've been conditioned to reflexively change the subject when confronted with facts or logic. This is even better. They will keep trying to change the subject, which will give you many, many opportunities to make the point that Republicans are 609 times more violent than BLM.
And wouldn't that be fun?
